Webinar: Accelerating Women’s Leadership in Local Government with the MML’s 16/50 Project

Tuesday, May 24
12:00 – 1:00 p.m.

Recognizing that women – 50% of the population – comprise only 16% of Michigan’s city & village managers, the Michigan Municipal League created a formal program with a single goal: to get more women leading local government. Within 5 years, the project has trained over 100 women through the Women’s Municipal Leadership Program and helped increase the number of women serving in top administrative roles to nearly 20%.

This session will detail the 16/50 Project’s successful program model, gather a panel of WMLP alumnae to explore program and career insights, and share tips on applying to the 2022 Women’s Municipal Leadership Program.

Women's Municipal Leadership Program

The Women’s Municipal Leadership Program is an exclusive professional development opportunity for aspiring women to advance their skills and hone their leadership abilities on the path to becoming strong local managers. Through this dynamic program, participants dive in on key topics instructed by municipal experts, build leadership expertise with an executive coach, and gain insight on the application of their new skills from current municipal managers.

Women Leading Local Government Sessions

The 16/50 Project is proactive in outreach and recruitment to help bring a new generation of women graduates to the profession and encourage those just getting started. Women Leading Local Government are interactive panel sessions hosted at universities throughout the state aimed at introducing students to municipal management as a career. Students meet the force of women leading local communities in Michigan, are presented with real-life municipal challenges to work through, and share dialogue with the panelists on the profession.
